“This is an amazing piece of work that transcends historical document to become art. Using the filmic language of noir, Petzold crafts a story of a culture caught in the aftermath of horror.” – Brian Tallerico, RobertEbert.com

“One of the best films I’ve seen this year.”–Ignatiy Vishnevestsky, AV Club

Set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, Phoenix follows Nelly Lenz (Nina Hoss) as she emerges from a concentration camp badly disfigured and subsequently undergoes plastic surgery to restore her pre-war appearance.

The plot kicks into gear after Nelly manages to reunite with her husband (Ronald Zehrfeld) and convince him that she’s someone else, with the narrative detailing the problems that inevitably ensue as Nelly attempts to perpetuate this lie.

Filmmaker Christian Petzold sets up the increasingly compelling nature of the storyline heightened by the presence of several intriguing twists. Stellar performances play a key role in cultivating the narrative. The movie ends with one of the most memorable and spellbinding final scenes in recent cinema history.
